END-OF-LIFE DOULA

A Courageous Heart: Calm Guidance When You Need It Most

End of life asks a lot of everyone in the room, more than anyone should have to carry without adequate support. As an end-of-life doula, I meet you where you are, with guidance tailored to what you need, so you're never left to hold it alone.

Guided by Compassion

I'm Jo MacDonald, a trained death doula based in Kamloops, BC. I believe no one should walk their final journey alone, and that includes the people around them holding it all together. Often, so much presses in at once during these final months: medical decisions to make, care to coordinate, arrangements to prepare, grief to carry, questions with no easy answers. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, what you really want is simple: just to be with the person you love.

My role is to take that weight off your hands, so you're free to be fully present for what matters most. That looks like being there for the person at the end of life and the people caring for them by handling the logistics & coordination when needed, and offering emotional & spiritual support when that's what's called for, so you can set everything else down and just hold your loved one's hand.

My Story

Today, I live and work in Kamloops on the traditional and unceded territory of the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc, within Secwepemcúl'ecw. This community is where I'm building A Courageous Heart as my children build lives of their own as young adults.

Death has walked alongside me for most of my life. I've lost people young, suddenly, and slowly, enough times that I stopped experiencing death as rare or distant, the way most people are taught to.

The first time it truly marked me was when my mother died. I was nineteen and nearing the end of my first pregnancy.

I stood at the edge of two thresholds at once, one life ending, another about to begin, not knowing how to hold both. There's no manual for that. No one tells you how to grieve and prepare for birth in the same breath, how to sit with an ending while your body is actively building a beginning.

That season changed how I understand death. Not as something separate from life, but as something woven into it, closer and less frightening than we're taught to believe.

That experience became one thread in what eventually led me to train as an end-of-life doula, alongside studies in Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, crisis intervention, and psychology.

All of that gave me a foundation. What it didn't give me was the room itself. Sitting with a stranger, for the first time, at the end of their life taught me something my mother's death hadn't: it's one thing to study death, another to sit inside it, and no training teaches you how to simply stay.

That's the foundation of this work: not the credentials, but the moments themselves. My mother's death. That stranger's. Those are what taught me what it means to hold space for someone at the edge of life.

I founded A Courageous Heart because I believe no one should have to face dying, or the dying of someone they love, without support. Whether you're planning ahead, supporting someone you love, or navigating a life-limiting illness, I'd be honoured to walk alongside you. If you're ready, let's start with one conversation.

A Holistic, Heart-Centered Philosophy

At A Courageous Heart, I believe every final journey deserves to be met with dignity, care, and real presence. My approach is holistic — I honour the emotional, spiritual, and practical needs of both the person at the end of life and the people who love them, so no part of the experience is carried alone.

My background in psychology, paired with years of experience in relational, high-intensity work, has shaped how I show up in this role. I understand the weight of human emotion, what it takes to stay present through it, and how the right guidance can turn fear and uncertainty into something steadier.

Through this philosophy, I:

  • Honour every individual: meeting each final transition with dignity, respect, and intentional care.

  • Support the whole person: addressing emotional, spiritual, and practical needs together, not separately.

  • Stay close, and stay steady: a calm, compassionate presence for both the person at the end of life and the family around them.

Personalized Support –
Plan with Care

Together, I create a plan tailored to your situation, whether that means end-of-life guidance, vigil presence, caregiver support, or a combination of all three. Every step is designed to honour your loved one and provide peace of mind for the family.

Presence & Guidance –
Walk the Journey Together

No two families need the same thing, and what's needed can shift along the way. I meet you where you are: answering a question one day, offering guidance the next, or simply sitting in the quiet with you when that's what's called for.

Reflection & Legacy – Honour Life's Moments

After the transition, I walk with you through this next chapter, where their life lives on as legacy, crafted with care from the stories, the small moments with the person you loved, and everything they built along the way.
